Bellucci truly brings out the most unholy and frightening sensuality, that quickly puts a spell on her fictional pray, as much as us.

A fantastic portrayal of the story of the famous Transylvanian lord of evil, with its compelling cinematography and convincing performances that will seriously give you chills to the bone, if you keep in mind its 15 years of existence. A dark and suspenseful horror fiction, treated with great delicacy and lusciousness. Bram Stocker’s Dracula (1992)Īlthough only obtaining a short amount of screen time, Monica Bellucci irradiates the viewer with her performance as one of Dracula’s brides in the Francis Ford Coppola film adaption of Bram Stocker’s classic novel.

A mix of different genres and perhaps a little too chaotic at times, this movie still took home a couple of awards and nominations and is a final burst of costumed action worth a watch.

She turns out to play a more significant part in the plot as it might have seemed at the beginning. Bellucci is, in this story, located in the midst of a brothel, where she plays Sylvia, a prostitute practicing the powers of witchcraft. The hunt for the truth, namely, finding who’s behind this bloody massacre, brings the characters of this plot on a wild and exhilarating adventure. Going back into the 18th Century, we are set in a mysterious and obscure ambience, where the Gevaudan province is under attack by an unrevealed beast that’s been killing the French land’s inhabitants. With two incredible performances, Bellucci is entirely in character and gives this movie a balanced and right-fitting result.

It’s a photograph that connects this character to a woman (Monica Bellucci), who she believes will clarify the mystery she is stuck in. She slowly feels her body transforming into a stranger, while her surroundings remain in the normality their lives seem them to be. Jeanne (Marceau) is a mother and wife to whom a peculiar sensation of change begins to infiltrate her being. They give Malena a sublime, memorably dream-like feeling that the film doesn’t really deserve.Sophie Marceau and Monica Bellucci star along together in this mystery thriller that encounters a rather strange and bizarre storyline, in which fantasy meets the psychological. The most memorable aspects of the film are Tornatore regular/veteran Ennio Morricone’s sweeping music and Lajos Koltai’s beautiful photography (both of which earned Oscar nominations). The numerous scenes of Malena walking through the town and the drooling men and disgusted women, become quite monotonous. The final half hour, which darkens considerably before picking up for a touching finale, seems out-of-place, and only shades of the film’s strong emotion and sadness ring true.īellucci is a stunning figure but barely has a thing to work with. There are definite shades of Paradiso in this coming-of-age film, which tries to mix poignant drama, crude humour, tragedy, nostalgia, movie-parody imaginings, comedy and romance. Renato and Malena have a highly unusual relationship for two people who don’t speak, but as Renato narrates and recounts his story we learn the effect that Malena has on his life. Malena has arrived in Castelcuta to care for her father while her husband is away at war, and she immediately becomes the subject of gossip, attraction, envy and curiosity amongst the townspeople. Malena is set in a small Sicilian town during a memorable summer in 1940, when a 13-year-old boy named Renato (Guiseppe Sulfaro) becomes transfixed with a woman named Malena (Monica Bellucci). Whether this is to do with its international distributor or not (Tornatore has had troubles with the distributors of Legend and Paradiso in the past, infamously chopping his films by up to forty minutes), this is the version that we are left with. As with Tornatore’s last film, the disappointing The Legend of 1900, Malena seems highly episodic and uneven. Malena sees Italian writer/director Giuseppe Tornatore return to the sentimental roots of his highly acclaimed movie, Cinema Paradiso.
